The Pelješac vineyard is 72km long and the part that is planted includes 950 hectares planted grape vines. 90% of these fields goes on Plavac Mali. Plavac Mali is an ascent, indigenous sort of grape wine which has adapted trough centuries to these land and climate and because of that gives the best results in winemaking. It is best for Plavac Mali to be planted on the south hill side so it can get a lot of sun. Pelješac is known for its beautiful terrain for grape vine planting, hill sides that face the sun and which produce some of the best quality vines. At the entrance to Pelješac above port of Papratno there are vineyards from which wine Stagnum comes from. Position of vineyard of the Dingač grape wine is very specific because the sun two time shines terrain: first time it is direct sun trough vineyard and second time it is reflected, the beam of light reflect on sea surface and hits the surface of vineyard. All of these nature factors affect the final product and that is the best quality wine. Postup is another grape wine variety and it is the pearl of Pelješac. On all of these terrains Plavac Mali has find its place, and has taken characteristic of each terrain individually and transfuse it to its grape berries. Plavac Mali gives grapes with high percentage of sugar, and moderate acids. Uneven ripening of grape berries is also another specificity of this grape, so we can find different color berries on the same bunch. Combination of uneven ripening of berries will give unique flavor to the wine. Color of these wines goes from ruby red to dark ruby red and ruby garnet color. All of these wines have high percentage of alcohol and that gives a sense of strength and intoxication and also sense of tasty deliciousness.

Lastovo is an island with long tradition in grape vine cultivation. The best quality grape wine sorts has been cultivating for centuries in fertile soils and fields in the inland of island producing the best quality wines. The names of these fields are Vinopolje, Nižno Polje, Lokavje i Prgovo. These fields have soil that retain water and moisture which is great for all kinds of agriculture. There are 2762 days of sun on this island which makes it the most sunny part of the Adriatic coast. All these factors together structure of soil, Mediterranean climate, and configuration of terrain makes the island of Lastovo suitable for grape vine planting. According to research "Proizvodni potencijal zemljišta na krškim poljima otoka Lastova"(S.Husnjak et al.) which includes 32 fields with size of 568,0 hectares, 189,3 hectares goes on vineyards or approximately about 33,3%. There are several sorts of white wine on island like grk, pošip, zlatarica, bijela bratkovina, malvasija dubrovačka, cetinka and trbljan, but the one which stand out is "Rukatac". When it comes to red wines "Plavac Mali" is the most planted together with other sorts like merlot, cabarnet and plavina. Thousand years tradition of grape growing and viticulture is impressive on Lastovo. This tradition luckily did not die yet, and now days we witness the new rebirth. The new modern wineries, like the ones of the Šarić family and Rončević family, shows that autochthon sorts of white and red grape wine can be cultivate on this island. The Šarić winery is situated on the foothill of place , region of Gornja Luka. They produce white wine Rukatac-Šarić , and also rose wine Opolo-Šarić ,these are kept in inox barrels. They also produce red wines like Plavac Mali-Šarić, and Merlot which are kept in Slavonia oak barrels. In the Rončević winery there are St. Vicenco wines. Theirs vineyards include 2 hectares and they are deployed on five different locations. The wines they make comes from autochthons sort of grape wine. So, these wines are St.Vicenco-Rukatac, St.Vicenco-Grk Slatki život, St.Vicenco Noni and St.Vicenco Plavac. There is an association of winemakers and olive growers called "Rukatac and Piculja" on the island. They are trying to promote the wines of the island of Lastovo trough project that are important for strategy development of island.

Komarna, a new star among the Adriatic wine growing regions, is located on the left side of the mouth of the Neretva River, in the municipality of Slivno. Until 2008 it used to be an impassable hill overgrown in underbrush and brambles. It is then that the Štimac family first came to the area and started clearing the extremely steep and inaccessible terrain, and growing grapes. Slowly but surely they were joined by other top Croatian wine growers. Today it is an area stretching over 80 hectares covered with more than 500,000 vines.

Komarna is the youngest wine region in Croatia and although it administratively belongs to the Neretva wine region, it is much more similar to the Pelješac wine region. Most of the production in the Komarna wine region is certified as ecological; in the majority of vineyards (92%) indigenous varieties are grown (Plavac mali, Pošip, Tribidrag, Maraština, Dubrovnik malvasija and Babić) while the rest are internationally popular and acknowledged varieties (Syrah, Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Viogner). Functionality, modern design and autochthonous products as well as market orientation are the basis of the business policy of the "K7" association of wine producers.

Four wine producers of the Komarna wine region (Saints Hills, Rizman, Volarević and Poljopromet) are currently recognized on the world market. Through their recognisability, the internal and market control of the quality of Komarna wines, the promotion of common interests of wineries and the development of rural tourism, the sustainability and progress of this region and its inhabitants can be created.

Unlike the nearby Pelješac, where red grape wine has been traditionally cultivated for years, Korčula is well known for its white grape wine and white wines. The most famous wine of Korčula is Pošip. It is indigenous variety of grape wine and it grows on vineyards of Smokvica, and also originally comes from Smokvica. Also it grows in vineyard Čare where it has spread and has been established. Pošip is relatively young sort of grape wine, it is more than hundred years old and was created by spontaneous crossing of two local varieties Bijela bratkovina and Zlatarica blatska. It was found by accident, in the wild, and gradually was cultivated and expanded, today is one of the most promising varieties of Croatian white grape wine in Croatia. The wine Pošip is full of flavor, it has high percentage of alcohol, characteristic aroma of dried Mediterranean fruit, golden yellow color, and it goes the best with fish, seafood and light meat dishes. An indispensable companion of Pošip is certainly Rukatac. Rukatac gives light wines, with aromas of flowers and ripe fruit, and it is excellent raw material for the production of natural sweet wine. In addition to the products as a varietal wine, it is excellent on its own and in blends with Pošip and Bratkovina. The third white wine from this island of wine and olives, which deserves special attention is Grk, today indigenous variety from Korcula. Grk grows on a limited area in Lumbarda vineyards, on a mild sunny slopes to the sea, on the typical sandy soil. One characteristic of this grape is that it is necessary for the pollination of other grapes, in this case Plavac, which are planted in vineyards of Grk as a pollinator. Grk wine has a very distinctive aroma and high alcohols, and is recommended to drink in all possible circumstances.

Island vineyards are located away from the wine highways. Korcula is well known for a very long time, but the words about Lastovo and Mljet can't seem to reach main land. There, one can primarily enjoy in the beautiful landscape where the wines are being made and nourished. The tradition of wine growing and wine making on the island of Mljet reaches back for centuries. Old Greeks brought the vines on the Dalmatian islands, followed by the Romans. Croatians that settled on these islands, including Mljet, accepted the vine culture and tradition. The monks can be credited for maintaining high ancient gastronomic reach in the following centuries. The establishment of the national park on Mljet requires a very careful strategic thinking and planning, including wine making as well. Limited resources clearly indicate how the strive should be towards excellent quality and the appropriate wine tourism.

In the last several years the approach to the cultivation of grapevines, and winemaking in Konavle has completely changed by the development of small family estates. These estates have dedicated to the production of best quality wines based on indigenous sorts of grape wine of this traditional wine region. Among these sorts the one that stand out is "Malvasija dubrovačka" which grows and cultivates especially in region of Konavle field, and its origin comes from Dubrovnik Republic. In the past centuries this sort of dessert wine was highly respect by the people in Dubrovnik, and also the highest class in Dubrovnik society and aristocracy of nearby countries enjoyed in this wine. There are records and scriptures that in 1383. they exported it to the Bosnian king Tvrtko I.Kotromanić. It has been served with candies or sweets , strawberries with cream, and also was used as protocol gift to respected political leaders during their visit to Dubrovnik. Trough periods after the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic, and also in the last ten years "Malvasia" has almost been forgotten. Nevertheless, upon the initiative of the Faculty of Agriculture of University of Zagreb, and Niko Karaman it has been revitalized and now we have 50 thousand vines of this ancient variety. Beside Malvasia in Konavle vineyards there are forty different grape wine sorts like Maraština, Grk, Zinfadel Crljenak, Pošip, Merlot,Plavac. Some of these are international grape wine sorts and some of them are indigenous from this region.

According to the rules on geographical areas of wine growing, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Croatia, published on 4.srpnja.2012.godine in the "Narodne Novine" Vineyard of the Neretva consist of: Metković, Ploče, Opuzen, Kula Norinska, Pojezerje, Slivno i Zažablje. So, the region Neretva includes seven municipalities and cities that are located around the estuary of the river Neretva, which are: the cities of Ploce, Opuzen and Metkovic and municipalities Slivno, Kula Norinska, Zažablje i Pojezerje. The Mediterranean climate that prevails in the Neretva Delta favors the development of agriculture and viticulture, especially because winters are not too cold and there is a lot of rainfall, and summers are hot and dry. During the year, this area has an average of 2700 hours of sunshine. The average annual temperature is 15.7 ° C. Neretva River Delta is surrounded by hills on the north and north-east side and also on the south side. On the western side of the area is open to the sea and under the influence of the same. The average annual precipitation is 1300 mm, of which 65-75% falls in winter. According to results published in the program of the development strategy of the LAG Local Action Group Neretva, and in the context of the Rural Development Programme, the annual wine production is estimated at around 10 million liters per year. Major wine producers are: Crafts Veraja (51,000 liters of wine) Vineyards Volarević Ltd. (13,000 liters of wine), Poljopromet Ltd. (22,000 liters) and Rizman Ltd. (15.000 l). These winegrowers and winemakers have plans to increase their production in the future. Also, the largest vineyards in Croatia is located in Pojezerje -between settlements Kobiljača Otrić-Seoci, Dusina (City Vrgorac) and Staševica (plates). Organic agriculture is in early stages of development, and currently there are 8 subjects in the –records of ecological agricultural producers. (Development Strategy lagneretva.) Also there are a lot of smaller wineries of which we will mention some like Prović Winery, a small winery next Opuzen, which is located in the heart of the Neretva river delta. Their vineyards are located 2 kilometers from the estary of the Mala Neretva. They grow Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Yellow Muscat and also they are the first wine producers who planted a crop of Chardonnay in southern Croatian. After the excellent results and the submission addressed to the Ministry of Agriculture, Chardonnay was added to the list of recommended varieties for planting in the Neretva region. Recommended cultivars of vine are a group of cultivars that can be grown in the field of wine-growing sub-region and of which produce wines can carry the protected designation of origin. Recommended cultivars for the sub-region of Central and South Dalmatia are: Alicante Bouschet, Babica, Babić, Bogdanuša, Bratkovina, Bratkovina crvena, Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, Cetinka, Chardonnay, Crljenak viški, Debit, Dobričić, Drnekuša, Glavinuša, Graševina, Grk, Kadarun, Kurtelaška bijela, Ljutac, Malvasija dubrovačka bijela, Maraština, Merlot, Mladenka, Mourverdre, Muškat crveni, Muškat ruža crni, Muškat žuti, Ninčuša, Plavac mali crni, Plavac mali sivi, Plavina, Pošip bijeli, Pošip crni, Prč, Rkaciteli, Syrah, Tempranillo, Trebbiano Toscano, Trbljan, Tribidrag, Viognier bijeli, Vlaška, Vranac, Vugava, Zlatarica, Žilavka.

Plavac Mali is probably the most important domestic Croatian sort of grape wine. This red wine was first mentioned in 1821 in the book " Der Weinbau des Oesterreichischen Kaiserthum" which was published in Wien by Franz Ritter von Heintl. For the long time it has been mistaken for Zinfandel, but scientific research revealed that Zinfandel is only one parent of Plavac Mali, and the other one is Dobričić from island Šolta. Origin of Dobričić variety is unknown, but it is considered to be an old indigenous Dalmatian variety. This variety is not widespread and is mainly found on the island of Šolta. It was used mainly for cross-breeding with other red varieties to give better coloration. Characteristics of this variety are intense bitterness and intense coloration which is why it was valued in the past. According to original scientific research paper " Relatedness of Cultivars Plavac Mali, Zinfandel and Primitivo (Vitis vinifera L.)", the result confirmed that Plavac mali and Zinfandel/Primitivo probably are related as parent and progeny. Also, these research confirmed that Plavac mali is an old indigenous Croatian grape vine variety. In Dalmatia, Plavac mali is cultivated on the narrow coastal areas and islands.

This variety of grape vine is listed on the National List of Varieties and Croatian National List of Recognised Vine Varieties as recommended for the sub-region of Central and South Dalmatia.

Crljenak is an old and almost forgotten Croatian grape variety. It become interesting when it was discovered that Crljenak and the American Zinfandel had the same genetic profile. Zinfandel was brought to the US at the beginning of the third decade of the 19th century. This variety ripens late and does not give big harvest of grapes, but it is mostly regular. The wines of this variety have extremely intense colors. The variety is susceptible to fungal diseases of the vine. It is grown mainly in Dalmatia. It is listed on the National list of varieties and the Croatian national list of recognized cultivars where it is recommended for middle and southern Dalmatia.

Maraština (Rukatac, Maraškin, Maraština, Krizol, Višana, Pavlos, Malvasia Bianca Lunga) is an indigenous white grape variety of the Croatian coast and Dalmatia. It is widespread throughout the coastal region from the north to south of Croatia.On the island of Cres is known as Krizol, and on the island of Lastovo is known as the Rukatac. Due to the widespread, variations occur within the varieties. Because of the high sugar winemakers like it. The characteristic of this grape is that it ripens later, and it is sensitive to powdery mildew. Clusters are not crowded, and grape have a yellow color that becomes pronounced as it is longer in the sun. It gives light wines, with aromas of flowers and ripe fruit, and it is excellent raw material for the production of natural sweet wine. In addition to the products as a varietal wine, it is excellent on its own and in blends with Pošip and Bratkovina. It is listed on the National List of Varieties Croatian and on the National List of recognized vine varieties as recommended for all three Dalmatian sub regions.

Grk is indigenous variety from Korcula. It grows on a limited area in Lumbarda vineyards, on a mild sunny slopes to the sea, on the typical sandy soil. One characteristic of this grape is that it is necessary for the pollination of other grapes, in this case Plavac, which are planted in vineyards of Grk as a pollinator. This grape ripens late and does not give big quantity of grapes and it mainly depends on pollination. It is believed that this grape variety is associated with a variety Crljenak in parent-descendant relationship. One theory is considered to be that origin of the Grk varieties could be linked to Greece, even though the Grk may refer to the bitterness of the grape. Back in the history Grk used to be planted in the vineyards of the Pelješac and in Konavle besides Korčula. Grk wine has a very distinctive aroma and high alcohols, and is recommended to drink in all possible circumstances.
