Traditionally, each Dubrovnik FestiWine hosts a Gala Dinner held in order to promote the education of young talents, the dishes by top chefs and the winning wines of the previous Dubrovnik FestiWine festivals. The Gala also enriches and strengthens the gastronomic and wine scene of Dubrovnik. The entire proceeds of the Gala are intended for funding scholarships for two young culinary talents, a young cook and waiter from Dubrovnik-Neretva County, who compete at the “Dubrovnik FestiWine Challenge”.

The winners of this year’s competition, Ivana Beran and Dario Baule, are currently in Ljubljana at the Strelec restaurant, training under chef Igor Jagodic. They will also assist the chefs at the 6th DFW Gala Dinner.

 


Representatives of Dubrovnik FestiWine, Tilda Bogdanović and Sibila Grčić, in company of Nikolina Farčić, President of Hospitality and Tourism Workers Guild of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County branch office, visited the winners of the DFW scholarships at Strelec Restaurant, talked to them, tasted the specialties of the Strelec Restaurant and conveyed the impressions of the young talents as well as their mentor, chef Igor Jagodic, who said he was very pleased with his cooperation with DFW and the young mentees, for whom he only has the words of praise!

"I was very pleased to have been a guest chef this year at Dubrovnik FestiWine because it is a really impressive event – the organization is great, the city is wonderful and so are the people. By providing funds for young people in the catering and hospitality industry, you are doing an excellent thing, a very important thing at the gastronomy scene. We are all looking for enthusiastic people to work with us and it has become really difficult to find good workers. I hope that Ivana and Dario learned a thing or two here and that they will take this experience to the next phase of their career. We are very pleased to have them with us”, said Igor Jagodic from the Strelec restaurant in Ljubljana.

Our scholarship holders are very happy with their visit to Ljubljana too. "Staying in Ljubljana, at Strelec restaurant is a wonderful new experience. The Strelec restaurant classifies among the best in Ljubljana and it has the best chef. It’s a small restaurant that tells a special story, the best of which is the food itself. There are à la carte and tasting menus offered here and the wine list is rich in locally produced wines. The food is created and presented by chef Igor Jagodic. All the dishes are prepared with local ingredients, and they are all traditional Slovenian dishes, although there is a touch of the French cuisine in each of them. Big thanks to the whole restaurant team for their patience and for giving me a closer look into their story. Last month was really nice and interesting. Besides, I’ve met some really great people who I’m looking forward to seeing again. I’m also very grateful to DFW for having selected me as one of the winners of the competition and who have made this new experience possible.” (Ivana Beran)

I came to Ljubljana with the aim of learning about new dishes and serving them, and the Strelec restaurant is an ideal place for that. I am very grateful for having been selected for this scholarship. This is one of the best experiences in my life, both in terms of work and getting to know other people. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen under chef Igor's mentorship. His approach is characterised by a lot of patience because the way he works and serves food is different from what we usually do. Cooking and presenting traditional dishes was really interesting, and although we do not speak the same language, we didn’t have any major problems in understanding each other. Upon my return to Dubrovnik I will try to use the gained knowledge and practical skills in my workplace. Thanks to everyone for this great learning opportunity! (Dario Baule.)

Dubrovnik FestiWine Challenge

The host of the Festival, the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, announces the competition called "FestiWine Challenge", and the expert committee (consisting of representatives of the hospitality school, DFW representatives and representatives of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County) selects the two best candidates based on their applications, who are rewarded with a one-month professional training and education under the mentorship of the guest chef of the gala dinner, at his restaurant. The scholarship covers all costs of travel, accommodation, insurance, and pocket money.

The Festival invites the famous guest chef, who together with the host chef from the ALH Hotel Group, which is also the partner of the Dubrovnik FestiWine, creates an attractive seven-course menu that accompanies top quality wines – the winners of the "Dubrovnik FestiWine Trophy" of the previous Festival. Along with excellent food and wines, the attendees enjoy their dining experience accompanied by pleasant music and professional presentation of wines and dishes. The scholarship winners of the previous Festival assist the chefs in preparing the food and serving it at the Gala.
Dubrovnik FestiWine Gala and FestiWine Challenge have both become recognized initiatives that encourage and stimulate young people to gain new knowledge and skills.
